Obituary: Tony Gregory; A true servant of the Working Class.

Yesterday with the burial of Comrade Tony Gregory, the Irish working class laid to rest one of its finest ever advocates. Tony almost single handedly proved that a left wing political activist can be effective by concentrating on the small picture. His example made many on the left understand that if it is to gain the support and respect of working class people we must be alongside them in their daily struggles; and when socialism is not on the immediate political agenda we can still work to improve lives.

Tony came out of the Irish Republican tradition and due to the influence of people like the late Seamus Costello, whose driver he once was, moved leftwards becoming Dublin's foremost community political activist. Indeed he wrote 'the book' which was to be later followed by organizations like Sinn Fein and the Socialist Party. The influence Tony Gregory’s actions had on rank and file socialists was enormous and not only in Ireland.
