e-readers

Does anyone have any knowledge of the e-reader, which is supposed to replace print. Sony is supposed to be bringing out a pretty good one this Xmas, while Amazon keep updating theirs.
They're even getting ready to show videos on tehse e-readers, so that I can watch dancing girls in the background as I plough through the equations of Marx's Capital.
I was tempted, but then I read that the problem wiht the e-reader is the problem wiht all electronic technology. It can go wrong. My book is my book - it's solid, it's there, I can put it away unread or unfinished because I know it's going to be there when I return.
But thngs can go wrong with an e-reader??? I don't want to be reading a good book which disappears suddenly because of an electronic fault. Does anyone have any knowledge of these contraptions, and are they worth buying if your money is limited? Will anyone buy me one for a Christmas present, please, thank you very much???

Can you fold the corners down on an e-reader?
Can you pick it up and sniff the print?
Can you scribble notes in the margins?
If the answer to any or all of these is NO, then I don't want to find one in my Christmas stocking. Don't get me wrong, I'm no technophobe. I've been dropping hints since September that I want a Playstation 3 or a substantial amount of home recording equipment. But you've got to draw the line somewhere.
